Many people are confused about the differences in the two terms of SEO and SEM, standing for Organic SEO Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing.

PPC ads are quick fix for supplying new traffic and hopefully new customers. The advertiser controls the PPC ad campaign. The advertiser (or his marketing manager) decides which keywords could find your ads in searches and supplies the ad text, and even decide hows much he want to pay. Budget can be determined daily, such as $100 a day, or monthly such as $500 a month in paid advertising. The advertiser can also pick the time of day to show the ads or days of the week, it is very flexible, depending on when the Advertiser thinks his market is most available. It is kind of like choosing where to place your TV ads, pick a channel and time. Ad far as how you are charged, you only pay for an ad when someone clicks it and is brought to your website. Choose Pay-Per-Clicks ads from either Google or Overture, and be prepared to spend a great deal of time (and money) monitoring and adjusting such a campaign or having your Organic SEO Search Engine Optimization Specialist monitor the campaign. Paid Directory Inclusion

By paying a search engine or a directory to add a website to its database immediately, rather than setting up that site so that it will be found by the search engine spiders on its own can be useful. Sometimes paid directory inclusion is the only way to get listed with some search engines and directories. For others, it's an option. By paying directories, your site will be listed sooner. It's also a good practice if you wish to make frequent changes to your content, because your site will be crawled more often and you will be able to test how changes affect your ranking.

By placing paid advertising on the search engine result pages (SERPs), your ad appears based on the keywords entered into the search engines. Charges are based on the number of impressions, i.e. hits, when the ad sends anyone to your website.

The Advantages of These Practices

It is slower, but you only pay once, and the improvements are permanent.  However, with SEM, Search Engine Marketing, you pay your money and get immediate gratification. You only pay for the click throughs (you can set it for views only if you want) and the chance of getting a new customer to quote or make a sale with are immediate. But when the money is spent there is not much residual effect. Customers may save your website and come back later if they don't perform the call to action immediately, or not. When you need to increase your traffic and your visibility right away, and you don't have a problem with spending a lot of money, this may be the way to go.

What About Disadvantages?

What are the disadvantages of SEM? It can cost a lot of money to bring people to your website. Will they find exactly what information they were seeking. You only have a few precious seconds to display your website and convince them that your website has what they want.
